The standard way to tackle a staircase is to use an unfinished plank matched to an off-theshelf stair nosing and finish it on site, as shown on the top step here. Given the huge variety of stunning prefinished engineered planks available, however, it is a shame to limit your stair product selection like this. Instead, we’ve a suggestion as to how you can utilise any chosen plank to create a neater, sleeker and more contemporary finish, and it’s very easy to replicate – simply remove the back of the board to the wear layer and lip it over the riser. Finish off with a trim to match, which can be machined to size from your chosen planks – and all using basic woodworking tools. You  can even create your own skirting boards simply by bevelling the edge and  staining it to blend in.
