In December, VidaSpace hosted a special commemorative event in the Auckland showroom, celebrating the phenomenal milestone of 40 years of Cuthbert Interiors.
Cuthbert Interiors was launched in 1979 by Interior Designer Janet Cuthbert. After becoming qualified in the early 1970s from the Inchbald School of Design in London, Janet returned to New Zealand where she began working with Architects, and from there the business grew. Janet has always been known for her impeccable quality of fabrics, use of colour and design, and is often referred to as the “Godmother of Interiors”.
Janet’s daughter Anna Cuthbert has grown up amongst interior design all her life, and followed in her Mother’s footsteps, studying in London at the KLC School of Design where she graduated with honours in 2002. In London, Anna managed the GP&J Baker textiles showroom, and previously she worked on projects all over the world, for Paris Ceramics. Anna’s passion, flair and expertise for interiors and art evolved, and after travelling the world Anna returned to New Zealand and started her own company – Anna Cuthbert Design.
Anna worked alongside Janet, they helped each other out, compared notes, and shared finishes. Anna says they are “on exactly the same wavelength and have very similar styles”.
In the late 2000s Janet retired completely and stepped back from Cuthbert Interiors, leaving the business in the capable hands of Anna. They merged the two businesses, Anna took over Cuthbert Interiors’ existing clients, and also brought with her a new generation of clients.
Cuthbert Interiors specialise in residential interiors, Anna loves working with people and seeing how happy her work makes them, often working across multiple generations of families. Although soft furnishings make her tick, Anna says that timber floors are vital, like paint colours they are “part of a canvas” – “to which you add the jewellery of the room”.
The event held on 4th December in our Auckland Showroom to celebrate 40 years of Cuthbert Interiors was a spectacular evening. Janet Cuthbert and her husband Gordon were in attendance, as well as clients, suppliers, industry leaders, and Anna’s family – husband Glenn, and teenage children Sophie, Charlie, Caitlin and Brianna. The event was truly a celebration of all things Cuthbert – even being catered with Anna’s homemade honey and chocolate brownie – a family specialty.
VidaSpace and Cuthbert Interiors enjoy a long-standing relationship.
