Reclaimed wood is currently enjoying considerable popularity, but traditional reclaimed planks involve extended fitting times and excessive wastage. VidaSpace offers reclaimed wood crafted into easy-to-fit engineered planks, solid planks and specialist reclaimed cladding in panel form. Our Vertical and Relik Collections heavily feature reclaimed wood.

The worn layers, tones and textures can bring a pleasing rustic aesthetic to any design style. There is just something warm & lovely about each piece and each has its own distinct story.

Utilising reclaimed wood decreases what goes into our landfills and it brings a history, texture, warmth and interest to interior spaces. “Wood is an amazing material, and how it’s used comes in and out of fashion,” said Brooks Atwood, adjunct professor of product design at Parsons in New York. “With the current trend in heritage-looking design, it’s easier to do that with reclaimed wood. There is the sustainability angle, but you’re also building in a story to your project.”

Using reclaimed wood helps create a warm and natural look in any space and it also has the added benefit of being eco-friendly by reusing something that would have otherwise been discarded. Reclaimed wood is often used as a contrast to a very contemporary steel and glass look in commercial buildings, just enough to warm it up without detracting from the up to the minute feel of the space.

The very attribute which makes reclaimed wood so highly prized – its total lack of uniformity – makes it difficult and costly to install and results in a high degree of wastage. Furthermore, the lack of a consistent and reliable supply makes specifying reclaimed boards a risk. But using the wonderful timber reclaimed from barns, docks, quays and lagoons purely for the lamella layer of an engineered board ensures a number of important advantages:

  • The boards are straight and of a relatively uniform thickness, making them quick and easy to install with very little wastage.
  • They are pre-finished and arrives on site ready to install.
  • The board remains highly stable, even given changes in temperature or humidity

Better usage of this reclaimed timber – a finite resource – results in double the yield compared with solid 20mm boards and regular and ongoing supplies mean that the reclaimed engineered boards may be specified with confidence.
